This week...vball and fball. And the winner is...

September 22nd, 2008 by Dave Vinton

Happy Monday all!

It's a fun week for the OC16 Sports team or is that hectic week?  They kinda go hand in hand...fun and being crazy.

Tuesday - September 23 - we have our first volleyball games.  As mentioned it's ILH action with Priory/HBA and Punahou/KS at 5pm and 6:30pm respectively from Punahou.

Friday a big test for Leilehua.  The defending state champion Mules host Waianae for their homecoming game.  (Leilehua vs Waianae 7:30 pm)  This game will really give the winner a strong bid for the OIA West title.

Couple of things to answer now.

From "ILH Fan":

A great game for OC16 to televise is on Friday, October 3, 2008 at 7 pm, HBA v. Punahou.  Why will this be a great game?   By then, HBA should be 10-1 (if it can get by a tough WOLA team) and Punahou should be something like 12-0.   During the preseason HBA beat Punahou at the Ann Kang Tournament. They split games but HBA won on points and captured the Silver Division Title by beating Punahou.  The October 3 game is at HBA at HBA's "spike nite" which is like homecoming and the gym is always standing room packed.  There are also two JV games preceding the HBA-Punahou showdown.  It would be great if OC16 can televise this game!

First picking games.  How do we them?  Why not this or that in the ILH?  Again the schedule and amounts of games are decided months ago.  I agree this match looks fun to do for TV but the dates were locked down a while ago.  I think as the ILH/OC16 relationship grows...we'll get more of these types of nights.

From "Puanani":

I would like to know how you guys choose the impact player of the game? I think that it is not fair on how you guys go about choosing them.

In our TV games - we give out two main awards in terms of trophies and plaques.  The "Team Player" award is decided by the team or school.  It goes to a student who embodies what it means to be a truly great teammate.  The "Impact Player" award is basically the player of the game.

We changed the name to Impact because we feel at times a player can come in late or just do one thing that impacts the outcome of a game.  It helps guard against just scoring points or touchdowns as being the only criteria for getting it.  Of course with that said...scoring points and what not does often sway things...lol...  Funny how the game winner can do that.

A group at the game consisting of the on-air talent, producers, and directors in the production truck compare notes late in the game to see who will get it.  Not everyone agrees but we hash it out with the limited time we have.  Gotta remember the TV broadast is still going on and there's a lot to do than just one award.

The above question came in via email following the Leilehua/PC football game.  It also suggest another deserving player for the Mules should have been  named.  Agreed their were many other fine choices.  But giving it to the player who got the start because Edieson Dumlao was out because of a concussion - yet had his best game including the game's first score that basically took the Chargers out of it...well...that's an impact.

This time around it was a good call on player that is often overshadowed.

    braddah dave-

just want to say mahalo to you and the production crew for the live sports. the picture quality of the football games are awesome . . . love it! keep up the good work everyone at oc 16 sports!

and good match-ups too . . . kinda bummers though, my alma mater (pchs) got small kine cracks from leilehua, but they represented purple and white very well - lotta potential in those chargers!

um, kinda wondering? how about broadcasting a game from our humble home field at kea'au high school anytime soon? our cougars got some game . . . would love for you guys to broadcast from puna.
